Flood and power cut: how do I keep my pets safe at home?
Last year our street flooded and the power went out for a day. I realised I had no plan for my dog and two cats. What do you keep ready in an emergency bag, and what do you do in case of evacuation?

We keep a bag with a week of food, water, medications, copies of vet records, a leash, and a carrier for each cat. Photos of the pets are on my phone in case they go missing. Also add a small torch, a battery fan or cooling mat, and a list of the nearest 24-hour vet in case something goes wrong.
HelpfulMove the pets to a higher floor early, don't wait. Dogs should not walk in floodwater, since it carries bacteria and leptospirosis. Dry them well afterwards. Cats tend to hide in a flood, so keep them in carriers where you can see them, and stay calm so they do too.
HelpfulKnow a pet-friendly shelter or hotel in a safe area beforehand. Keep the microchip registration current. Tell a friend or relative outside the affected area that your pets are with you, so they can help if you need to leave.
