Songkran: my dog hates the water guns and fireworks. Plan?

This will be our first Songkran with a rescue dog, who is sensitive to noise. Our soi turns into a water fight for days. I'd like to keep her safe and calm. How do you handle Songkran with pets? Can I walk her at all?

   We stay in and walk early, before the water starts, around 6 a.m. Keep the windows shut, play music, and give a chew. Keep her away from the street party. Water guns scare many dogs. Give her a special treat for each time she stays calm, and a safe room, so she links the noise with something enjoyable.

   Never let your dog off the leash during Songkran, since panicked dogs run. Make sure the microchip details are updated and the tag is on. Update the tag and microchip contact before the festival season, because every year some frightened dogs bolt, and tags get them home.

   If she is very afraid, ask your vet in advance about calming options. Some people go to a quieter town for those days. Some dogs are fine with a short visit to a quiet province, so if you have family upcountry, it might be a good idea.
