My rabbit stopped eating hay during the hot weeks. Should I worry?

Mochi is a three-year-old lop and since the weather turned very hot she eats much less hay and sits stretched out. Her droppings are smaller too. Our flat has AC only in the bedroom. I know rabbits are fragile. How do you keep a rabbit comfortable here, and when do I call a vet?

Small droppings or not eating for more than about 12 hours is vet time with rabbits, since the gut can stall. Call an exotic vet today. For heat, we keep ours in the AC room at about 25 degrees with a ceramic tile and frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel.

Be careful: not every vet knows rabbits. Ask beforehand if they treat rabbits. I take mine to an exotics clinic in Bangkok, and they were gentle and clear. Fresh hay and water at every meal, and no direct sun at all.

Do not use a fan blowing directly on her, and don't bathe to cool down. Damp ear tips can help slightly, but the room temperature matters most. Keep a note of the clinic's emergency contact on your phone too, because rabbit problems always seem to start in the evening or on a weekend.
