Recall at the beach: my dog won't come back when she sees other dogs

SBSiriporn Boonmee1 month ago1,102

I take my young dog to the beach early mornings in Hua Hin. She runs to every dog and ignores my calls. I'm afraid of a bad meeting or a stray going the wrong way. How do I train a reliable recall? I'd keep her on a long line.

Build up distraction level slowly. Ten minutes a day is better than a long session once a week. Keep her on the long line until she responds more than nine times out of ten, even in very exciting places like a beach.

Use real treats like chicken. Reward her with a game afterwards, and send her back to play again. That made recall very strong for my dog. Finally, never use recall to end the fun every time, and call her back, give treats, then let her go play again.

A long line is the right tool. Practise in quiet places first with tasty treats, a special cue only for recall, and make it a party when she comes. Don't call her just to end the fun. I'd also practise recall at the beach in a quiet corner or with a friend's calm dog, before trying it among a crowd of people.
