Dog panics at thunder in the rainy season. Anything that helps?
Every storm, my beagle shakes, drools and tries to squeeze behind the toilet. It is getting worse each year, and storms here are loud. I don't want to sedate him for every afternoon thunderstorm. What do you do to help your anxious dog cope?

We made a den in the bathroom with a blanket and played a thunderstorm sound at low volume on sunny days with treats, so the sound became boring. It took weeks but it helped. Staying calm yourself matters, dogs read you.
HelpfulTire him out before the usual 3 p.m. storm, and close the curtains and put the AC on to reduce the flashes and drumming of the rain. If he refuses to eat or is destructive during storms, mention it at the next check-up so the vet can suggest the safest options for him.
HelpfulA snug vest worked for one of ours but not the other. Check with your vet about calming options, and they can tell you if medication is right for severe cases. Don't punish the hiding. Whatever you try, remember that sounds recorded on a phone speaker are a gentle start, then slowly raise the volume over days if he stays relaxed.
