Our parrot screams at 6 a.m. and the building manager noticed

We have a lovely sun conure who screams at sunrise every morning and again at dusk. Our condo has thin walls and the manager has already asked me about it. I know birds are loud, but is there anything to reduce the screaming? We cover the cage at night already.

Conures call at dawn and dusk naturally, it is their flock call. We changed it by making sure the bird gets 11 to 12 hours of dark sleep, moving the cage away from the window, and giving a foraging toy in the morning to keep the beak busy.

Don't shout back or rush to the cage when it screams, because that rewards the noise. Reward quiet moments with a treat. It took a couple of months, and she is now more of a murmur. Just keep the cage out of direct sunrise light, because light through the window can start the early noise. A light cover for the first hour helps.

Daily out-of-cage time and company makes a big difference. A bored bird alone screams much more. Also check with your vet that the diet is balanced. It will not be quick, birds need weeks of consistent routine, but a calmer bird is happier too, and your neighbours will thank you for it.
