Is fostering a cat a good idea if I work long hours?

A rescue group asked me to foster a mother cat and her four kittens for six weeks. I'm home in the evenings and weekends but away eight hours a day. Has anyone fostered while working full-time? What did you need, and how hard was it to let them go?

Kittens need feeding every few hours when very young, but weaned kittens are easier. Ask the rescue what age they are and what support they give, such as food, vet costs, and a contact person. Every rescue differs, so ask for their foster guide, and a clear plan for what happens if the kittens get sick or need a vet at night.

I fostered with a full-time job. Use a bathroom or small room as the base, with a litter tray, heat-safe bedding, and toys. The goodbye was tough, but I cried and then took the next ones. When the day came for goodbyes, I got updates and photos from the new family, which made it so much easier on my heart.

The rescue should cover the vet costs. Make sure there is an arrangement if one gets sick while you are at work. Start with a small commitment, such as two weeks, so you can see if it suits your schedule and your own pets at home.
